For Sale: Rusty French’s 1979 Porsche 935/80
This stunning black and gold 1979 Porsche 935/80 comes direct from Rusty French and is up for sale at Fantasy Junction.
An evolution of the powerful but tricky to handle 934, the turbocharged, 2.8 litre 935 could run up to 23 pounds of boost and produce a mighty 630 horsepower. Plenty to push its aerodynamic fibreglass form to four wins from seven races in the 1976 World Championship for Makes.
Porsche sold this particular 935 to Alan Hamilton of Porsche Cars Australia in 1982, who in turn sold it to Rusty French.
It took a gap year in 1983 before receiving an update with Kremer K3 parts for the 1984 season. Rusty campaigned it successfully in Australia from ’84 to ’87 before heading to England and continuing his success, culminating in the pair claiming the 1989 British GT Championship.
From there he returned to Australia, winning the Gold Coast Indy Sports Sedan/GT race in 1991 and bringing it home fourth in 1992. Following that, after nearly ten years of flat-out and consistently successful racing the car was retired from active racing.
Its retirement wasn’t long, however. In 2004 it received a full restoration and by 2005 it was back on the track racing in historics. Since then it has been to Japan for the Le Mans Classic, won the IMSA GT class in the Monterey Historic at Laguna Seca twice and taken part in the immense Rennsport Reunion, just to name a few.
Having seen it in action several times, we can confirm that it is most definitely a monster of the most magnificent make.
