Colin Chapman’s Lotus 49 was one of his finest and most influential Formula 1 designs. This one was raced successfully by Graham Hill, Richard Attwood and Dave Charlton, making it particularly special.
And you can buy it!
It’s heading to the auction block at Bonhams’ upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed Sale, where it’s expected to fetch somewhere between £700,000 and 1,000,000.
Hill raced it in the Tasman Series in 1969, securing two second place finishes, as well as a fourth and a sixth. The car was then shipped back to Europe where Richard Attwood drove it to fourth place and a fastest lap in the 1969 Monaco Grand Prix.
Its period racing career saw it again in the hands of Hill for the ’69 British Grand Prix and eventually those of Dave Charlton, who raced it to secure the first two of his six consecutive South African Formula 1 Championship titles in the early ’70s.
This is the first time that the car will be offered at auction, and it’s sure to cause quite a stir!
It’s already stirred our hearts and we hope to see it go to a good owner, and active in the world of historic motorsport, soon.
