1989 Nissan R89C 1:18 Models By Exoto
Exoto has just released the fabulous looking Nissan R89C in 1:18 scale. Any Exoto model has to be seen to be believed in terms of attention to detail. Some of the the many features include spring loaded quick fuel fillers, removable front and rear sections, opening doors, functioning suspension and steering that really works. In an Exoto first, the model also sports lockable pit service hydraulic jacks so you can jack up the car and remove the wheels!
The actual race car was built by Nissan to contest the World Sports Car Championship and the 24 hours of Le Mans. The car first ran in anger in March 1989 where the 3.5 litre turbo engine propelled the car to a top speed of 240mp/h (386km/h). This proved it would have the top speed to compete at Le Mans, but with the big race just three months away, reliability was always going to be a concern.
The team entered three works cars (pictured), the lead car driven by Aussie Geoff Brabham, American Chip Robinson and Dutchman Arie Luyendyk. Unfortunately none of them made it to the finish line. The all British line up of Julian Bailey, Mark Blundell and Martin Donnelly in car 24 went out after only 5 laps. The all Japanese team of Masahiro Hasemi, Kazuyoshi Hoshino, Toshio Suzuki retired after 167 laps with the number 25 car, led by Brabham, was classified in 22nd place after going out on lap 250.
