Martin Brundle drives Jim Clark’s Lotus 49
Silverstone celebrated its 60th Anniversary as a motor racing Circuit in 2008. As part of these celebrations, organisers brought together grand prix cars from the past six decades and Martin Brundle got to drive them all!
In the video, Brundle does a few laps in one of the most beautiful and successful cars in grand prix history, the famous Colin Chapman-designed Lotus-Cosworth 49.
The Lotus won on debut in the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort and went on to a popular victory at Silverstone in July 1967, when Jim Clark beat Denny Hulme in the Brabham BT24, and Chris Amon’s Ferrari 312.
Brundle doesn’t feel quite at home in the old Lotus, and mentions that part of the problem is that the “engine was simply ten years ahead of the chassis…”.
