Classic Ads: Stirling Moss Wins on BP

Submitted by on December 2, 2010

Here we have a very early 60’s magazine advertisement for BP – featuring a fresh-faced Stirling Moss.

The International 100 was the headline event on an extremely hot summer day in late January 1961. This being one of the very first major meetings held at Warwick Farm.

As well as Moss, the star-studded grid included Innes Ireland in another Lotus, Dan Gurney and Graham Hill, both in BRM’s and a Cooper mounted Jack Brabham.

In stifling heat, Moss won the 45 lap race from pole, ahead of Ireland and local star Bib Stillwell’s Cooper. So incredible were the temperatures, race reports indicate many retirements due to driver exhaustion, and several non-finishers experiencing boiled fuel – including Brabham – and boiled oil.
