Video: Johnny Rutherford interviewed about his massive 1980 crash
Submitted by Rich Fowler on January 24, 2011
Three time Indy 500 winner Johnny Rutherford (1974, 1976 and 1980), also known as “Lone Star Jr” talks about surviving his shocking crash at Phoenix International Raceway in 1980.
Rutherford was leading the race and went to pass backmarker Dennis Firestone when the two cars touched. Johnny’s car flipped and landed heavily upside down right on his head.
Amazingly Lone Star Jr escaped with nothing more than concussion, slight burns to his forehead, a cut under his eye and a lacerated finger.
Just another reminder how brave these guys were.
See the crash unfold in the video below at the 6:40 minute mark.
