Best of The Cahier Archive: Jean Alesi
Jean Alesi started 201 Grand Prix and took just a single victory, yet his flamboyant and emotional style won him a legion of fans, particularly amongst the Tifosi during his five year stint at Ferrari. His Formula One career also included spells at Tyrrell, Benetton, Sauber, Prost and Jordan.
Alesi will be remembered for his blazing start to the 1990 season in the Tyrrell. At the United States Grand Prix at Phoenix, he was a sensation, finishing second after leading for 25 laps in front of Ayrton Senna after a mighty fight. Second place in the Monaco Grand Prix followed and by mid-season, top teams were clamouring for his services in 1991. A very confused situation erupted, with Tyrrell, Williams, and Ferrari all claiming to have signed the driver within a very short period.
History shows he went to Ferrari yet we all wonder how many titles he would have won if he went to Williams…..
