10 of the best from Autopics: Allan Grice

Submitted by on November 15, 2011

Known to motor racing fans simply as Gricey, this two time Bathurst 1000 winner (1986, 1990) was a hard charging, blisteringly quick, no nonsense racer.

Gricey won the Australian Sports Sedan Championship in 1978 and 1979 and was the 1984 Australian GT Champion. Arguably his biggest win came driving the Chickadee Holden Commodore at Bathurst in 1986. Grice and car owner Graeme Bailey led for all-but 12 laps with Gricey driving a marathon like 137 of the 163 laps to take a popular privateer victory.

When asked recently, which Bathurst win was more satisfying, Grice replied: “I think 1986, as we kicked the factory’s arse. They didn’t like that, but you get that.”
