Legends of Motorsports Celebrates the 50th Anniversary of Phil Hill’s World Championship

Submitted by on November 30, 2011

Winning a Formula One World Drivers’ Championship takes complete dedication and commitment, not to mention a car and team up to the task. The same is true for the 24 hours of Le Mans, and the same is true for the 12 Hours of Sebring.

Winning all three in one year takes something else; that special something that pops up once in a lifetime to make history.

Phil Hill did it in 1961, and 50 years on in 2011 it’s time to celebrate. Legends of Motorsports will honour Phil and his incredible achievements during their final event of the season, held at Sebring on the 2nd and 3rd of December.

The event will be packed with historic race cars from all eras and they’ll available for ogling in an open paddock when they aren’t busy being raced on the legendary circuit. It will also include a special exhibit featuring a timeline of Phil’s ’61 championship season to showcase his incredible achievements that year. Just in case it doesn’t sound sweet enough already, the first 200 spectators to purchase a two day ticket, along with all participants, will receive a limited edition art print commemorating Phil’s historic championship.

Legends of Motorsports Powered by HMSA to Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Phil Hill’s World Championship

Legends of Motorsports Powered by HMSA will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Phil Hill’s Formula One World Championship during the final event of the 2011 season at Sebring Florida, December 2nd and 3rd.

1961 was a truly remarkable year for Hill. He is the only person in history to win the Formula One World Championship, the 24 hours of Le Mans and the 12 hours of Sebring in a single season. After clinching the championship at Monza, the Ferrari team decided not to compete in the US Grand Prix denying Hill the chance to celebrate in his home country. Now 50 years later, Phil’s family, friends and fans can honor one of the greatest drivers in the history of the sport. Hill’s wife Alma and son Derek will be our honored guests at the event.

A special historic timeline exhibit will showcase Hill’s accomplishments in his championship season. A numbered limited edition art print commemorating Hill’s championship will be given to all participants, as well as to the first 200 spectators who purchase a 2 day ticket.

Historic race cars from all eras will be on display in the open paddock and raced on track, where these extraordinary machines can be seen and heard in their full glory. Attending a Legends event is equivalent to walking into a museum that suddenly comes to life before your eyes.

Run groups for this event will include:

  • GTP/GROUP C/WSC (Classic to 1993 and Contemporary 1994‐2005)
  • 2 Liter Sports Cars
  • Trans‐Am/Thunder and Lightning
  • Sports 2000

  • IMSA GT/FIA GT
