This stunning and rare De Tomaso Pantera Group 4 has a racing history that’s unmatched by its peers, and has recently enjoyed a no-expense-spared restoration. It’s up for sale at RMD, and would make for a brilliant ride in historic motorsport.
In 1972 De Tomaso built eight Group 4 Panteras, selling seven to customers and keeping one for their factory race car. This car, chassis #2873, is that one works machine.
De Tomaso raced it from 1972 until ’77, with men like Clay Regazzoni, Mike Parkes, Mario Casoni and Odoardo Govoni at the wheel. In 1977 they sold it to Odoardo Govoni, who continued to race it himself with De Tomaso maintaining it.
Throughout this time the car won the Tour of Italy outright a number of times, including many more class wins, the Italian Championship of Speed (circuit) three times and the 5000cc class in the European GT Championship. Documentation claims over 90 victories for the car.
It’s spent the past two years enjoying a no-expense-spared restoration which included rebuilds of the engine, gearbox, fuel system, suspension and geometry.
The original bodywork is featured and has been finished in the car’s 1973 Giro d’Italia livery.
In September 2013, at the completion of its restoration, the car competed successfully at Spa Francorchamps, and it’s now ready to roll with spares, FIA HTP and even road registration.
We think it’s awesome, and hope to see it go to a good home, or at least find one on the track!
