Chrysler’s VF Valiant Pacer 225 was a budget-minded car with performance that punched above its pay grade and opened Australia’s eyes to the benefits of motorsport development.
The VF Pacer had a diamond up front in the form of a high-compression 3.7-litre, 175 bhp slant six that at the time was the most powerful six-cylinder made in Australia. Its signature low-rev torque could happily launch it to sub 18-second quarter miles.
Power wasn’t the only thing the Pacer had going for it – it came with manual floor shift, lowered suspension, front anti-sway bar and tachometer, and was lent racer good looks thanks to special wheel covers, bright colour options and racing stripes.
The full package offered punchy performance at a great price and was the perfect match for young and/or feisty drivers looking for something that was both sporty and practical.
Its impact was felt both on the roads and the track, and went beyond just being a great value performer. Find out how in VF Valiant Pacer 225: The Sports Sedan that set Chrysler’s pulse racing thanks to our friends at the Shannons Club.
