Soper v Rouse Duelling Cosworth RS500s at Brands Hatch
Steve Soper and Andy Rouse duke it out for victory around Brands Hatch in a pair of Sierra Cosworth RS500s during the 1988 British Touring Car Championship.
This race is from round eight of the thirteen-round championship (including the cancelled Birmingham Superprix).
Andy Rouse had spent much of the season cleaning up in Class A with his Rouse Engineering RS500. One of the few people to take a round off him that season was Steve Soper, who’d won early in the season at Thruxton Circuit, and even pinched pole position from Rouse’s very near clean sweep of qualifying.
Soper is hard at work on taking another round from Rouse in this race. The pair are evenly matched, with Rouse enjoying a very slight power advantage thanks to a trick turbo. It’s a brilliant dice as they swap the lead in a series of classic passing manouvers.
Things only get better when the wipers go on and the traction goes away early on in the clip. Golden age tin top touring car racing at its very best – hit play!
