This bright yellow beauty is an Escuderia Montjuich 1970 Ferrari 512M – a car designed to tackle the increasing might of the Porsche 917 and an icon of sportscar racing in late ’60s and early ’70s. It’s up for sale at Fiskens.

The car, chassis 1002, was sold by the Ferrari factory to Escuderia Montjuich in April of 1970.  It would be one of twelve Ferraris that took on the 24 Hours of Le Mans that year.

José Juncadella and Juan Fernandez piloted the car for the race, which they would sadly drop out from 130 laps in after a racing incident. From Le Mans the team would race in the Jarama 12 Hours and the 1000 Kilometres de Paris, where they won their class and took second overall behind Jack Brabham and François Cevert in a Matra-Simca.

Chassis 1002 kicked off 1971 with a fifth in the 1000 Kilometer Buenos Aires at the hands of Juncadella and Carlos Pairetti. It then went to Daytona for the 24 Hours, where it qualified seventh only to bow out of the race with a mechanical.

At this point it went back to the factory for a little love and attention and was upgraded to 512M Berlinetta specification in time for its return to Le Mans. Juncadella secured Ferrari factory driver Nino Vaccarella as his co-driver for the race and the pair ran in fifth before being forced into retirement thanks to transmission damage.

1971 was rounded out by the 1000 Kilometers of Monza 1000, the Interserie Imola, Osterreichring and the 1000 Kilometre de Paris. The car finished the season with a second in the Tour de France driven by Juncadella and Jean-Claude Guenard.

Escuderia Montjuich sold the car to Robert Horne in 1974. He sent it to Ferrari specialist Bob Houghton of Greypaul Motors for some love and attention and he, astonishingly, has maintained and prepared the car to this day.

Changing gears from its World Sportscar Championship career, Horne began preparations to run the car in a British Land Speed Record. In 1977 he hit a record-setting speed of 192 miles per hour over a flying mile. He owned the car for thirty five years, passing it on to its current owner in 2009.

1002 recently competed in the Le Mans Classic, where it ran beautifully and performed in a manner befitting its impressive period career.

It’s sold in beautiful condition with a full history file and Certificazione di Autenticita from Ferrari Classiche. For the full details head to Fiskens’ official site here.
