This 1968 Ferrari 166/246 Dino has been raced by Jacky Ickx, Derek Bell and Ernesto Brambilla, achieved great success in the Tasman Series and is responsible for Ferrari’s first Formula 2 win. It’s up for sale at Fiskens.
The car, chassis 0010, is one of two modified by Ferrari to Tasman specification between 1968 and 1970. In 1968 Ernesto Brambilla drove it to victory in the Preis von Wuttemberg at Hockenheim, giving Ferrari their first Formula 2 win by squeaking into the lead with an on-the-grass manoeuvre that left him 0.2 seconds in front.
The car was then bought by Chris Amon for his Tasman Series racing endeavours. Enzo Ferrari provided this car, 0010 and another, 0008, which would race under the Sydney-based team Scuderia Veloce.
For racing in the Tasman Series the cars were uprated by Ferrari with 2.4-litre V6s, Lucas indirect fuel injection and a straight five-speed gearbox with final drive. They also received limited slip differentials, rack and pinion steering, coil spring damper units and Girling ventilated two-pot caliper brakes.
Amon took on the responsibility of the number one seat in 1969, driving 0008, and Derek Bell got behind the wheel of this car. Bell would take his first win in a Ferrari when he and 0010 won at Levin early in the year, and the pair would go on to add two second place finishes and a fourth to their tally for the year. At the end of the season Bell finished fourth, with Chris Amon winning the championship in the sister car.
When it retired from its period racing career, 0010 went into Sir Anthony Bamford’s Ferrari collection, then to Dudley and Sally Mason-Styron who hill climbed it to some success in the ’80s.
It’s now up for sale at Fiskens including a fully-researched history file and a great collection of period photographs. For the full details, hit this link to Fisken’s official site.
