This BMW M5 Superproduction is super tough and has the performance and resume to match. It’s heading to auction next week at RM Sotherby’s’ London sale.
The first BMW M5 was based on the E28 5 Series. It was designed to provide the looks and zing of a sports car, with the more grown-up styling and comfort of a saloon car. At its launch, it was was considered the fastest production sedan in the world.
BMW Motorsport took that car and hand-built the BMW M5 Superproduction. And they got started by dropping in a 3.5-litre dry sump engine built by Pipo Moteurs and based on the powerplant found in the M1. A good start, and they didn’t stop there. Other trick bits include Kugelfischer mechanical injection, BMW Motorsport five-speed close-ratio Getrag box and ZF LSD.
This car, chassis 3586317, was driven in 1985 by Marc Sourd – a French driver with a five-decade career of motorsport success to his name. The pair would win the 1985 GP de Nogaro, Challenge Pacific, in September of that year. And its owners since have done a great thing – they’ve left the car’s body original, complete with the battle scars earned in races like those.
They have recently rebuilt the engine and drivetrain, however, meaning the car’s racing fit and ready for a new driver. Looks like a lot of fun to us!
The BMW M5 Superproduction will head to auction on Wednesday the 7th of September, 2016, at RM Sotherby’s London sale. Head to their website here for more details.
