A veteran of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and Targa Florio, this beautiful Works Bizzarrini GT 5300 Competition Lightweight Coupe is up for sale at Fiskens.
Very few Bizzarrinis were built, and this car, BA4 0106, is one of the finest. The GT 5300 was completed in 1953 and is the only right-hand drive fibreglass competition car the factory built.
It debuted in the 1966 1000 Kilometers of Monza driven by Edgar Berney and Antonio Nieri. Sadly, the race was affected by rain and the team did not have a set of wet weather tyres prepared for the car, dropping it out of contention. Bizzarrini then took it to the Targa Florio with Berney and Nieri back behind the wheel. They were quick until a blown head gasket knocked them out.
In 1966 Bizzarrini ran BA4 0106 as one of a pair of works entries in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This time Sam Posey and Massimo Natili would be behind the wheel, although sadly they were unable to turn the car’s potential into results, disqualified 39 laps in for crossing the pit wall line during two consecutive laps.
A 7-litre big block was dropped into the car in preparation for the 1967 season, which saw it back at Le Mans featuring new front oil cooler and bonnet scoop.
And then, the car entered a long retirement. It was sold, sans engine, after Bizzarrini’s bankruptcy and put into storage for three decades. Following that it was purchased by David Hart in 2008 and restored to its Le Mans 1966 livery and spec by Simon Blake of Historic Automobiles. Its historic racing career has seen it find success on the track commensurate with its performance, and we hope to see that continue in its new owner’s hands.
Full details on the car can be found at Fiskens’ official site here.
