This 1989 Jaguar XJR-10 claimed four wins in the 1989 Camel GT Championship, making it the most successful of the Jaguar XJR-10s. It’s magnificent in Castrol livery, and up for sale at Taylor & Crawley.
After winning the World Sportscar Championship in ’87 and ’88, and taking outright wins in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and 24 Hours of Daytona in 1988 with the V12 XJR-9, Jaguar and Tom Walkinshaw Racing began work on a smaller, lighter turbo 3.5-litre V6 for 1989. It was unfortunate timing, because the FIA introduced new regulations for the World Sportscar Championship requiring a 3.5-litre naturally aspirated engine. The motor perfectly suited the IMSA GT Championship, however, and that was the XJR-10’s playground.
This car, XJR-10 389, debuted some way into the 1989 season at the Toyota Trucks Lime Rock Grand Prix running in Castrol colours. The race would be won by four-time IMSA GT Champion Geoff Brabham in a Nissan GTP ZX-T and Jan Lammers would drive 389 the front of the row to second place.
The car’s first race win came two months later at the Portland International Raceway driven by Jan Lammers and Price Cobb. It picked up one further win in 1988, crossing the line first in the final race of the season – the Camel Grand Prix of Southern California. This performance helped Jaguar to second in the constructors’ title, with Geoff Brabham taking the first of four consecutive drivers’ titles in the series.
Price Cobb and John Nielsen would drive the car to its third win in 1990, when they won the Toyota Trucks Lime Rock Grand Prix. It picked up one final IMSA GT win in 1991, when it ran in Bud Light livery in the Nissan Camel Grand Prix of Miami driven by Raul Boesel.
This storied and successful racer is looking magnificent and would be very welcome at historic race meets around the world. It’s up for sale at Taylor & Crawley, and you can get the full details on their website here.
