This glorious 1955 Jaguar D-Type found great success in Australia and was driven in period by Frank Matich. It’s been sympathetically restored to stunning condition, and is up for sale at Will Stone Historic Cars.
The car, XKD 526, was sold to the Anderson company in Australia, and was the first D-type to enter the country. Cyril & Doris ‘ Geordie’ Anderson shared its ownership and use with Bill Pitt.
In 1956 Geordie Anderson set a 120 mile an hour flying quarter mile at Strathpine piloting the car. She improved on that in the Leyburn sprints, setting a new state record by clocking a 135.2 mile an hour quarter mile.
Later in 1956, Bill Pitt drove the car at Lowood and Albert Park, where he rolled it competing in the Argus Cup in December. Pitt was unhurt and the car wasn’t seriously damaged. It was repaired and was back in competition just two months later in February of 1957.
Mid-way through 1959 the car received parts from the Jaguar factory to update it to 3.8-litre specification.
Late in 1959 it was sold to Leaton Motors, who ran it in yellow with a black stripe. Aussie legend Frank Matich campaigned the car into the ’60s alongside Doug Chivas. During this period it was fitted with an aluminium fastback hard top to allow it to compete in GT competition.
That hardtop was removed and stored away by the car’s next owner, who gave it a break from racing and sent it to Classic Autocraft for a restoration that was completed in 1982.
When the current owner bought 526, they returned it to the United Kingdom and sent it to CKL Developments for further restoration to the immaculate condition in which you find it today. It was raced at the 2017 Goodwood Revival, and will be welcome around the world where ever good historic motorsport can be found.
This immaculate sports car racer is one of the most iconic cars of the sport’s golden age. Fit for racing or collection, it would make a glorious addition to anyone’s condition.
It’s up for sale at Will Stone Historic Cars, and you can find the full details here.
