For Sale: 1982 Lancia LC1 Group 6

One of just four, this 1982 Lancia LC1 Group 6 won the 1982 Nürburgring 1000 kilometers and was driven by Teo Fabi and Riccardo Patrese, amongst others. It’s up for sale at Girardo & Co.
The car, Chassis LC1-0002, was the second of the four LC1s built by Lancia. It was completed in March of 1982 and sent to Mugello where Piercarlo Ghinzani performed its shakedown. In April, it headed to Monza for further testing and setup work in preparation for the start of the 1982 World Sportscar Championship.
Just a few weeks later, LC1-0002 debuted at the Trofeo Filippo Caracciolo at Monza with Teo Fabi and Piercarlo Ghinzani piloting. The team qualified second overall, behind the team’s second car, but would leave the race 104 laps in with electrical problems.
The Pace Petroleum 6 Hours at Silverstone was up next, and the team continued to demonstrate the car’s speed, qualifying second and leading the race for two hours before engine troubles forced them into retirement. The LC1 driven by Michele Alboreto and Riccardo Patrese would prevail, giving the model its first victory.
LC1-0002 was back on the front row of the grid with when the team got to the Nürburgring for the Rudolf Caracciola Wanderpreis 1000 Kilometres. Starting the race from second, Alboreto and Fabi led for most of the race, with Riccardo Patrese also taking a driver stint and securing points in the drivers’ championship.
For the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the car was set up in its slipperiest configuration for maximum speed down the Mulsanne Straight and handed back to Alboreto and Fabi, with Rolf Stommelen joining the crew. They qualified well, first in class and fourth overall, but would leave the race just after midnight.
In the hands of Alessandro Nannini and Corrado Fabi, the LC1 was back on the podium after the Trofeo Banca Toscana 1000 Kilometres at Mugello, with another LC1 driven by Alboreto and Ghinzani taking the win.
The final round of the 1982 season was the Shell Oils 1000 Kilometres at Brands Hatch. This time out, Fabi was joined by Riccardo Patrese and they qualified third overall, first in class for what would be a heavily rain-affected race. The event was red flagged early on because of rain, and then run to a shortened distance in two heats. Our pair saw the final chequered flag first, but victory went to the Porsche 956 of Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell on aggregate. Riccardo Patrese would just barely miss out on the drivers’ title, with Jacky Ickx claiming it.
Lancia Martini Racing sold the car to Giuseppe Di Gioia and Germano Nataloni in 1983, with Nataloni competing in hill climbs and Di Gioia taking it to Circuito del Levante. It eventually made its way to Jean Guittard in 2015, who gave it a mechanical refresh and organised its FIA Historic Technical Passport. It received Lancia Classiche certification in 2017 under the custodianship of John Campion.
