This highly-developed 1986 Ford RS200 Evolution 2 began its life with King Hussein of Jordan before heading back to the factory to run in the 1989 European Rallycross Championship. It’s up for sale at Duncan Hamilton ROFGO.
The car, chassis 20, was built up by Ford to be one of, if not the fastest and most developed RS200s in existence. It features a 2.18-litre Evo 2 engine capable of putting out over 700 bhp, the front diff is a factory ribbed rallycross component and the dry sump tank sits in the front right under the windscreen, which is unique to this car. The electronics and ECU are also unique to the car, as is much of the interior and dash, and the ‘Stig Blomqvist’ steering wheel.
The custom beast was bought by King Hussein of Jordan, who had Stig Blomqvist to train him in its wrangling. Despite this training and his previous experience hillclimbing a factory specification Evo 2, the king decided that the car was too much, and sent it home.
Ford then prepared it for the 1989 European Rallycross Championship, where it was competitive if not untouchable. Stig Blomqvist and Jonathan Palmer were on board to pilot, although only Blomqvist would spend time behind the wheel in anger. He scored 7th in Sweden before achieving a string of podiums in Finland, Belgium and Holland.
Chassis 20 was prepared for the British round of the championship at Brands Hatch, where Palmer was to have a run, but the round was called early after the qualifying heats. Since then, it’s been mechanically restored but is otherwise untouched.
Ford sold the car in fresh bodywork to George Stauffer in 1990, keeping the original raced bodywork for spares. The current custodian is its third owner. All of the car’s unique developments remain, including the original fire extinguisher system from period. Road registered, it’s been kept in race-ready condition despite running few miles.
