Our friends in the Historic Sports and Racing Car Association of New South Wales took to the track for their first historic race meeting of the year this past weekend, running their Autumn Festival of historic motorsport over the 20th & 21st of March, 2021. Scroll along, and enjoy some images of the action.
Having wrapped up 2020’s season with one of the hottest weekends on record, the club opened 2021’s motorsport with one of the wettest. Sydney endured an endless torrential downpour over the weekend, causing floods and significant damage. Wakefield Park Raceway is in the country town of Goulburn, which was on the edge of the weather, so while conditions were wet and traction was hard to come by, the club was still able to go racing.
The sports and touring car fields of Group S and Group N were strong and provided some of the most action-packed racing over the weekend, with the conditions allowing some of the lighter and more nimble cars to work their way up the order. The Minis of Group N in particular did what they do best, hassling the bigger cars as they worked on getting the power to the tarmac.
In the single-seater race categories, Formula Vee and Formula Ford put on some great events. Closely-contested as always with plenty of drafting and back-and-forth, the spray coming off the tyres added to the show.
While most spectators wisely chose shelter, a few die hard fans braved the weather for each event to watch their mates race. In the pits and paddock, there was still plenty to see and do with the usual tinkering and spinning of yarns taking place.
Following shortly after the Phillip Island Classic and taking the opportunity to enjoy a weekend catching up after the summer break at a more relaxed pace, the Autumn Festival is usually a quieter and more social affair. The club will kick into top gear over June 12 & 13 with the Sydney Classic at Sydney Motorsport Park, which promises to be a special one as the club celebrates its 40th birthday, recognises the motorsport contributions of the late Ron Tauranac and much more.
