Nürburgring Classic 2024: Report and Gallery

At the end of May, the Nürburgring Classic brought around 22,000 spectators to the legendary circuit for a weekend of historic motor sport. Crowd pullers during this edition were the extremely fast single seaters of the BOSS GP Racing Series and the presence of the touring cars from the golden era. Over the weekend over 800 participants competed in seven different racing series as well as numerous special races.

One of Europe’s fastest racing series, BOSS GP brought action-packed, fast motor sport boasting the unique sounds of Formula 1, Formula 3000 and Indy Cars on the asphalt of the Nürburgring. Former Formula 1 driver Antonio Pizzonia gave a true show of his driving skills over the weekend.

From Germany, the DMSB was present with the historic championship, in fact the German Historic Automobile Championship, divided into HC65 and HC81. In the first race of HC65 the battle for the lead was between Felix Haas, Alexander Kolb and Oliver Hartmann. Haas took the lead during the opening laps, although Hartmann closed in quickly with his Elva.

Haas’ race came to a premature end when his left front wheel broke off on the 9th lap. Hartmann then raced unthreatened to victory, ahead of Kolb. The second race of the weekend was an exact copy of the first in terms of final results, with a second victory for Hartmann, followed by Kolb and Faber-Castell and Newall.

HC81 had a single ninety-minute race on Sunday. Felix Haas made up for what he was unable to do in the HC65 series race due to bad luck. The Swiss dominated the race from start to finish with his Lola T210.

Historic Monoposto Racing from the Netherlands was part of the program with historic Formula Fords and Formula 3 cars. Frank Färber dictated the pace with his Reynard during the first race. Färber also had no opposition in the second race of the weekend and scored his second victory.

Although the battle of the dwarfs presented the tiniest cars of the event, several ongoing battles thrilled spectators. Herbert Wein Jr. and Hans März were evenly matched during the first race and both could have claimed victory. It was only in the very last lap that Wein Jr. was able to secure victory. Third place went to Gregor Nick. The second race was very similar to the first with exactly the same result, although the decision for victory had to wait until the very last lap.

Almost 50 touring cars participated over the weekend, with some thrilling battles among the drivers. Yannick Trautwein was the man to beat in his BMW E36 STW during the two races over the weekend.

Always a guarantee for a large grids and a variety in cars are the two separate divisions in the Youngtimer Trophy. In Youngtimers 1, Mike Stursberg and Markus Diedrich took two impressive victories in their very fast Escort. Youngtimer 2 saw a true Porsche battle with a victory for Daniel Schrey in the first race. Michael Wittke won the second race of the weekend.

The Nürburgring Classic occupies an indelible place on the historic motorsport calendar. We are already looking forward with great anticipation to the 2025 edition, which should take place at the end of May next year.
